El Trapiche is a small resort town in a valley of the San Luis hills, about 39 kilometres north of the provincial capital, crossed by a river of the same name. Its name comes from an old trapiche, a mill for crushing ore, used in the area's gold mining. It is known for its greenery, rivers and streams, making it one of the favourite summer retreats for people from San Luis: river beaches for swimming, campsites, inns and cabins among the trees, and walking trails in the hills. At its entrance lies the La Florida reservoir, fed by the Trapiche river, and five kilometres north is the Esteban Agüero dam. Wandering is free; it is at its best from spring to late summer when the rivers run full, and it pairs with La Florida in a single day.
