**Yes, but not as in the photographs.** The colour is genuine, coming from **ground shell and coral** mixed through white sand to give a pink-to-red cast โ but it appears in **patches**, not as a colour across the whole beach, and shows most clearly at the water's edge and after waves. Many circulating images are **digitally saturated**, creating an expectation reality doesn't match, and visitors leave disappointed for that reason alone. Go expecting a beautiful white beach with pink in places, and you will enjoy it. โ And don't take a handful of sand as a souvenir โ it is **illegal** and fines are issued.
**Yes with a full day and a car; no if you're weighing it against a day in Chania.** The drive is part of it: it crosses mountains, valleys, villages and the **Topolia gorge**, and is among the finest roads in Crete โ but it is **winding** and tiring for anyone prone to car sickness. The beach rewards you if you arrive **early** (before eleven), ahead of the buses and tours. โ Arriving at midday in August means a packed beach after a two-hour drive โ the worst outcome. For anyone short of time, the nearer alternative is **Falasarna** to the west: half an hour closer and comparatively empty.

A beach at the far **south-west** of Crete known for its **pink sand** โ and the colour is real, though gentler than edited photographs suggest: pink and red grains of **ground shell** and coral fragments mixed through white sand, concentrated in patches rather than across the whole beach. What makes it remarkable, more than the colour, is the **shape**: the small islet of **Elafonisi** is separated from the mainland by a **shallow lagoon** usually no deeper than knee height, so you **wade across** to it. Children play safely in that shallow water, which makes it one of the best beaches in Crete for families. It is a **protected area** within the Natura 2000 network, with dunes, nesting sea turtles and rare sand lilies โ โ which is why **taking the sand is forbidden**, as is walking on the fenced dunes. โ It is about **75 km** from Chania on a winding mountain road taking **an hour and a half to two hours** each way โ a full day.
