La Florida is a reservoir at the foot of the San Luis hills, about 47 kilometres northeast of the provincial capital, gathering the waters of the Grande and Trapiche rivers and giving birth to the Quinto river. It covers about seven hundred hectares, up to 45 metres deep, and is the main source of drinking water for the cities of San Luis and Villa Mercedes. The dam was built between 1945 and 1953, after studies that began in the nineteenth century. On its western shore are campsites and a fish-farming station, and beside it a reserve for native plants and wildlife covers 340 hectares; visitors dive, windsurf, kayak and fish in its waters, and swim in designated areas. Visiting the shore is free, and it sits at the entrance to El Trapiche, so the two go together.
