The Río Tercero reservoir, officially Ministro Pistarini, is the largest artificial lake in Córdoba province, spreading over some 5,600 hectares at the heart of the Calamuchita valley, at 660 metres between the slopes of the Sierra de los Cóndores and the Sierras Chicas, about 110 kilometres south of Córdoba city. Work on its dam began in 1911, and the Ctalamochita river flows out of it. The lake has become a big summer destination: marinas for sailboats and motorboats, beaches and campsites, the town of Embalse on its shore, and fishing. Around it are small green islands, the dam spillway where water pours over the rocks with road bridges above, and viewpoints over blue water between hills. Wandering is free; spring and autumn are quieter, and sunset over the water is lovely in any season.
