Embu das Artes is a town on the south-western edge of Greater São Paulo known as «the city of artists», where Paulistanos come at weekends for the arts and crafts fair that fills the streets of its historic centre. It began in 1554 as a Jesuit village called M'Boy, and the Church of the Rosary in the centre was begun in 1690. Its artistic identity took off in 1937, when the local sculptor Cássio M'Boy won first prize at the Paris International Exposition and drew other artists to town; painting and sculpture studios and rustic-furniture shops have been part of its character ever since. The arts and crafts fair runs every Saturday and Sunday along the main streets of the historic centre, such as Rua Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Rua Joaquim Santana, Rua Boa Vista and Largo 21 de Abril, with rustic furniture, paintings, plants, clothes and crafts alongside restaurants and cafés. Wandering is free, and midday to late afternoon is the best time.
