A long modern promenade on the wide Paraná River in Encarnación, facing the Argentine city of Posadas across the water, with walkways and broad sandy river beaches that earned the city the nickname «capital of summer» in Paraguay. The Costanera has walking and cycling paths, green spaces, kiosks and restaurants, and the bank looks over the long international bridge linking the two countries and the lights of Posadas at night. In summer the river beaches fill with people. Encarnación is also known for its big summer carnival in January and February, with parades, costumes and music in an arena on the riverfront. It is the best base for the Jesuit missions of Trinidad and Jesús, about 30 kilometres away. Sunset over the river is the finest time. Summers are very hot. Paraguayan summers are very hot and humid from November to March, so carry water and a hat; winter is milder for sightseeing.
