Enoshima is a small forested island off the coast southwest of Tokyo, reached by a long bridge. A narrow, climbing street of shops and restaurants passes under a bronze torii gate, steps and shrines wind among the trees, and on the far side waves break on rocky cliffs. The island is about 4 km round and linked to the mainland by a 389 m bridge. The whole island is dedicated to the Japanese goddess of music, who legend says raised it from the sea in the sixth century. In 1880 a British merchant bought part of the uplands and created a large botanical garden. The nearest sandy beaches to Tokyo and Yokohama lie beside it. You climb the street and steps to the top, visit the garden and observation tower, then go down to the rocks and caves on the seaward side. On clear days you see Mount Fuji across the bay. It is about 6 km in a straight line west of Kamakura, reached by the coastal Enoden train. It is very crowded at weekends.
