The National Botanical Gardens of Uganda, in Entebbe, are a large green garden on the shore of Lake Victoria. Giant trees and tall palms stand over the lawns, red paths wind between the plants, monkeys move through the branches and the wide lake gleams beyond the trees. Commonly called the Entebbe Botanical Gardens, they were laid out in 1898 by the first curator, A. Whyte, near the lakeshore. They are divided into zones, including a rainforest section that formed the backdrop to scenes in the Tarzan films of the 1940s. Birds include hornbills and marabou storks, along with black-and-white colobus monkeys. The Milege World Music Festival is held here every November. You walk the paths among trees and flowers, watch the birds and monkeys, then sit by the shore looking out over the lake. The gardens are in Entebbe on the lakeshore, under a kilometre from the town centre. Do not feed the monkeys, and bring water and sunscreen.
