One of the largest wetlands kept in its natural state in China, in Ergun in northern Hulunbuir. Once called the Genhe Wetland after the river that runs through it, it took its present name in 2009 and covers 126,000 hectares. The Genhe River winds across a broad green plain in loops that read like letters; the best-known sights are «Horseshoe Island», «Heart Island» and the «S-bend». Visitors climb to a hilltop platform looking over the river, forests and grassland, and a Russian-style visitor centre with golden domes stands at the entrance. Tickets cost CNY 65 from 16 May to 15 September and 20 the rest of the year, with the shuttle bus at 15, open from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, per visitor guides; it is loveliest in summer and early autumn.
