A wide mountain lake 1,972 m above sea level, stretching about 40 km from north to south and seven to eight kilometres across, covering about 250 square kilometres; it's the second-largest highland lake in Yunnan. The Cangshan mountains rise to the west, Bai villages, rice fields and old towns such as Xizhou and Shuanglang dot its shores, and the mountains and clouds mirror on its blue water in a scene that changes through the day. The favourite way to explore it is by bike or car along the road hugging its western shore between villages and fields, or by boat, then sitting in a lakeside café at sunset. Walking around the lake is free, with some viewpoints and boats ticketed. Early morning and sunset are best; the sun is strong at this altitude, so bring sunscreen and a hat.
