Erice is a historic town in the province of Trapani, western Sicily, Italy, on top of Mount Erice at about 750 metres, about 5 km northeast of Trapani in a straight line. It belongs to «The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy». From the summit the town looks over Trapani, the low western coast towards Marsala, Capo San Vito to the north and the Aegadian Islands off Sicily's northwest coast. A cable car links the lower part of Erice at the foot of the mountain, next to Trapani, with the old town at the top. Cobbled lanes wind through the old town between grey stone houses and walls, and a small castle and the old Pepoli turret stand on the cliff edge. From the heights a wide view opens over the sea, the plains and the salt pans of Trapani, and mist sometimes wraps the summit, giving it a mysterious air. Visitors ride the cable car up from Trapani, wander the lanes and squares and stop at the castle for the finest view. The town is known for its traditional almond sweets, and it is much cooler at the top than on the coast.
