The José Lins do Rego Cultural Space is a multi-purpose cultural complex and convention centre in João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba, opened in 1982 and regarded as an architectural landmark nationwide. It was designed by the architect Sérgio Bernardes and was the first metal-framed building in the city, monumental and symbolic in character, showing off the expression and function of its materials. It is named after José Lins do Rego, a writer from Paraíba known for his semi-autobiographical «sugar-cane cycle» and the novel Menino de Engenho, which brought him international fame. It holds a museum of the writer, a planetarium, the Archidy Picado art gallery, music, dance and circus schools, an arena theatre and the Paulo Pontes Theatre, a science station, a library and exhibition mezzanines. Visit the writer's museum and a planetarium show, or catch a play. Check the events programme and planetarium times.
