A broad sandy beach sweeping in a long curve south of Essaouira's old town on the Atlantic, facing the Purple Isles offshore, the largest of which is Mogador Island, known since Roman times for its purple-dye industry and now a nature reserve for birds including Eleonora's falcon; landing there is not allowed without a permit. Essaouira is nicknamed the Wind City, as strong trade winds blow most days of the year, making its beach one of Morocco's best-known spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with schools that teach these sports and rent out gear. On the sand there are horse and camel rides, cafés and restaurants along the neighbouring promenade, impromptu football matches played by local youths at low tide, and walks along the shore to the dunes in the south. The beach is free and open; wind and currents can make swimming difficult at times, so follow the flags. The loveliest time is sunset, when water and sand turn orange.
