Baturité railway station opened on 2 February 1882, in the reign of Emperor Pedro II, on the trunk or southern line of the Ceará rail network. It reflects the economic importance of a region whose produce, above all coffee, was carried from here to the capital, Fortaleza. The station stands on one of the main squares of the Putiú district. Beside it, a Maria Fumaça steam locomotive was set on a plinth during the celebrations for the Baturité railway's centenary, and the old warehouses and shunting tracks can still be seen. Today the station works as a museum preserving many parts of old machines and their wooden moulds, a collection of furniture used at the station and old travel tickets. The building is protected by the national heritage service, and a visit is a chance to admire its architecture. Check opening times before going.
