Railway architecture.
The Estação Memória Zeza Souto is a museum and cultural centre in central Ipatinga, housed in a disused railway station built in 1930. It keeps documents on the city's history and hosts a range of cultural activities. Ipatinga and the other Vale do Aço towns owe their beginnings to the Vitória a Minas Railway, laid through the region in the 1920s: small settlements grew up around its stations and later became towns, before the steel industry transformed the area in the second half of the century. Through its objects and documents the museum retells these stages, from the age of the railway and the first villages to the modern industrial city, making it a good stop for anyone wanting to understand the Vale do Aço. It stands on Rua Belo Horizonte; call the museum or check the city website for opening times.
