Rio Claro station opened in 1876 as the end of the broad-gauge section of the Companhia Paulista's main line, and from 1884 it was the interchange with the Rio Clarense railway until that line's last stretch was removed in 1966. The first building was demolished in 1911, and on 23 January that year the present one, under construction since 1909, was opened. The station mattered to the company because the town held its large workshops and its famous tree nursery, and it carried passengers until 1999. It was listed as state heritage in 1985; since 2002 the building has been an events centre, and part of its covered platform houses the city's central bus terminal. Its façade and iron-roofed platform can be seen on a short walk around the centre, and it pairs well with a visit to the Navarro de Andrade forest, created by the same company.

It is used as an events centre, so access depends on what is on; the façade and platform are always visible.
