The Ilha do Retiro stadium, officially Estádio Adelmar da Costa Carvalho, is the home of Sport Club do Recife and was the first stadium built in the city, after the club bought a small 17-hectare farm. It opened on 4 July 1937; its official name honours the club president who led its first big expansion, while its everyday name comes from the district it stands in. Its history reaches beyond the club: at the 1950 World Cup it hosted Chile against the United States. Sport's fans lived great moments here, among them the 1987 win over Guarani that gave the club its first national title, after a dispute with Flamengo the Supreme Court settled in Sport's favour, and the 2008 Copa do Brasil final, when Sport overturned a first-leg defeat to Corinthians with a 2-0 win while their opponents had already booked a trophy party. You can see the stadium from outside for free, but its real atmosphere comes on match days, above all the Recife derby, with tickets through the club.
