It was built in 1968 and is owned by Botafogo Futebol Clube, known as «Botafogo-SP» to tell it apart from the Rio club, and named after the district where it stands. The stadium opened on 21 January 1968 with Botafogo beating the Romania national team 6–2. Its attendance record, 49,358, was set on 17 March 1993, when Brazil and Poland drew 2–2; Brazil had played here before, beating Chile 2–1 in 1981. It also hosted the 1995 São Paulo state championship final between Palmeiras and Corinthians.
