The place where the Magdalena, Colombia's longest river, squeezes into a rock channel just a few metres wide, so the heavy water rushes hard between smooth, dark stone walls, after the river was far wider upstream and will be again downstream. You reach it on a short path through forest and stand on the rocks above the roaring water, imagining that this very narrow channel becomes, hundreds of kilometres later, a great river crossing the whole country to the Caribbean at Barranquilla. Around the gorge are green forest and birds, and it is quiet with few visitors. People usually visit with the archaeological sites around San Agustín, or on a horse or jeep tour of the countryside. The water is fast and very dangerous and the rocks slippery, so keep back from the edge and never try to swim. The road is muddy after rain.

Never: the water is fast, deep and very dangerous and the rocks slippery. Watch only from a safe distance.
