Esztergom Basilica is a huge church with a tall green-grey dome and a facade of great columns, standing on a hill above the Danube, visible from the far bank in Slovakia. It is the largest church in Hungary and the seat of the Catholic Church there. It is 118 m long and 49 m wide, and its dome is among the tallest in the world, 71.5 m high inside and 33.5 m across, and 100 m high from outside. It was built on the foundations of earlier churches on Castle Hill, and beneath it lies a vast crypt built in 1831 in an Old Egyptian style. You step inside to see the dome from below, climb a long stair to the dome gallery for views of the Danube, the bridge to Slovakia and the hills, then wander the neighbouring castle ruins. It is about 1.5 km in a straight line north of central Esztergom and makes a day trip from Budapest. Keep quiet and dress modestly.
