Èze is an old stone village on a clifftop above the French Riviera, in the Alpes-Maritimes department of southeast France, about 8 km east of Nice and 5 km west of Monaco in a straight line. The commune has about 2,100 residents. Èze has been called an «eagle's nest» for its position on a high cliff 427 metres above the Mediterranean. The area was settled around 200 BC, and a hoard of Greek silver bowls from the 3rd century BC was found here. In 1860 its people voted unanimously to join France. Its light ochre church can be seen from far away. Brown stone houses pile up around the rocky summit, with narrow lanes, steps, arches and covered passages winding between them, climbed by plants and flowers. From the top of the village a wide view opens over the blue sea and the coast as far as the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula. Visitors wander the lanes among small shops and galleries and climb to the exotic garden at the summit for the widest view. Some walk the steep Nietzsche Path between the village and Èze-sur-Mer on the shore; the village is crowded by day in summer.
