An island in the Arabian Gulf some twenty kilometres off the coast of Kuwait City, with a history spanning thousands of years, from Bronze Age settlements of the Dilmun civilisation to a Greek fort and temple of the Hellenistic era, when it was known as Ikaros. The island has archaeological sites open to visitors, among them the remains of the Hellenistic temple and fort and the ruins of ancient settlements. Its people were displaced after the 1990 invasion, and the scars of war still show on some buildings, so the island also carries a sad memory. Visitors come on a day trip to wander among the ruins, visit the heritage village and enjoy quiet beaches and clear water away from the bustle of the city, getting around by bus or hired car. Visitors arrive by ferry from Ras Salmiya port in about an hour, with fares and schedules varying by company and season. The cooler months, from November to March, are the best time to visit.
