The Beberibe Cliffs Natural Monument is a reserve in Beberibe on the east coast of Ceará, between Morro Branco and Fontes beaches. It was created on 3 June 2004 to protect the cliffs from earlier damage, covers 31.2 hectares and receives about four hundred visitors a day. The cliffs run along the coast for about six kilometres where the Barreiras tableland meets the sea. They are made of fine- to medium-grained sand-clay sediments in colours ranging from white to yellow to red, cut by narrow passages known as the «labyrinth», source of the coloured sands used to make pictures inside little bottles. The reserve is fully protected, allowing only ecotourism and research with permission from the responsible agency, and local young people were trained as guides. Go in the morning or late afternoon when the colours glow, and bring water and a hat.
