Of island stone.
The Ilha da Paz Lighthouse stands on a small, rocky, forested island off Enseada beach in São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina, about two nautical miles from the coast, in the Graças archipelago. Building began in 1905 using the island's own stone, and the light was inaugurated on 20 August 1906. Its tower is sixteen metres tall, with the light 84 metres above the sea. Its rotating optic was made by the French firm Barbier in 1894, and it ran on pressurised kerosene until 1982. Keepers' houses surround the tower. Keepers once lived on the island with their families, and the first keeper's two daughters were born there and named after the island and the archipelago. The removal of stone for the building formed a small beach on the island. Landing on the island itself is limited to those with Navy permission, but boat trips from Enseada circle it, and divers come for its clear water. Ask locally about trips and sea conditions.
