The Pedra do Sal Lighthouse stands on Pedra do Sal beach on the island of Ilha Grande de Santa Isabel in the Parnaíba River delta, about ten kilometres south-east of the river's main mouth, and belongs to the Brazilian Navy. It was first lit on 4 March 1873 on an octagonal metal tower, making it the first lighthouse on Piauí's short coast, only sixty-six kilometres long. It was switched off in 1919 when an automatic light was built about ten kilometres away, but returned to service in 1923 with an acetylene lamp at the request of local fishermen, and five years later its metal tower was encased in masonry. Today it sends out a white flash every six seconds. Set in one of the loveliest corners of the delta, it makes a good stop on a beach trip from the nearby city of Parnaíba; the tower is seen from outside.
