Solidão Lighthouse, the «Lighthouse of Solitude», is a red tower standing alone on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, about sixty kilometres north-east of the Mostardas resort and some fifty-five kilometres south of Palmares do Sul, and it lives up to its name on this empty stretch of sand and pasture. It was built because of the many shipwrecks along this coast: a first iron tower was lit on 2 September 1929 and was later replaced by today's concrete tower after rust took its toll. The red cylindrical tower is twenty-one metres tall, braced by four long buttresses, and its light reaches fifteen nautical miles in normal conditions. Travellers on the long coastal road between Palmares do Sul and Mostardas stop here for photographs and the open horizon, especially at sunset. There are few or no services on site, so carry enough water and fuel.
