The Farol das Conchas, «Lighthouse of the Shells», stands on a hill on Ilha do Mel off the coast of Paraná. It opened on 25 March 1872 by order of Emperor Pedro II to guide sailors, built with materials brought from Scotland. The climb is about 150 stone steps through native vegetation, and it is about half an hour's walk from Nova Brasília village. The lighthouse itself cannot be entered, but around it a 360-degree view takes in the whole island, the ocean, the beaches, the villages and the Paraná coast to the horizon. The visit is free; go early in the morning or late in the day to avoid the heat. Boats reach the island from Pontal do Sul in about half an hour for about R$49 return, and the state is bringing in an access fee and a cap on visitor numbers, so check before you travel.
