The Abrolhos Lighthouse stands on top of Santa Bárbara, the largest island of the Abrolhos archipelago off the coast of southern Bahia, which includes the Abrolhos Marine National Park, and it is a landmark for everyone who visits the islands. It is a 22-metre cylindrical cast-iron tower with two galleries, painted in narrow horizontal black and white bands and prefabricated in France. It holds one of only two known Fresnel lenses of a special type made by the French firm Barbier & Bernard; the other is in the Ilha Rasa lighthouse off Rio de Janeiro. Its light sends a white flash every six seconds, visible far out to sea. Santa Bárbara belongs to the Brazilian Navy and visitors do not usually land, but the lighthouse is plain to see from the boats that carry visitors from Caravelas to the marine park for snorkelling, seabirds and humpback whales between July and November. Trips are arranged through accredited agencies.
