The Mãe Luíza Lighthouse, as Natal's lighthouse is best known, stands on a hill in the Mãe Luíza district, amid a traditional fishing community, overlooking a coast whose many reefs made navigation here dangerous for ships. In 1942, during the Estado Novo regime, the Navy reported that it had built and inaugurated «Natal's radio lighthouse», though historians record its opening in 1951. It is run today by the Navy's Northeast Nautical Signalling Service, and geographers count it among the monuments that tell the story of the settlement and defence of Brazil's territory. The lighthouse was refurbished in 2017 and reopened to visitors, especially school groups, to whom naval staff explain its importance for safe navigation along the state's coast and its history. Its surroundings give a broad view over the city and its beaches. Check visiting times before going.
