Mostardas Lighthouse stands on the long, empty coast of Rio Grande do Sul, about twenty kilometres north of the town of Tavares, on land now within Lagoa do Peixe National Park, famous for its migratory birds. The lighthouse was first lit in 1894 on a metal tower, but rust and neglect damaged it over the following decades, and it was rebuilt in concrete in 1940, keeping the old tower's lens and lantern. The cylindrical tower is forty metres tall and painted in horizontal black and white bands, making it a clear landmark on the flat horizon between sea and dunes. It is a natural stop for anyone exploring the Lagoa do Peixe coast by car, combining the open seascape with the birdlife of the coastal plain. The tower belongs to the Navy and is seen from outside, and the sandy roads in the area need care after rain.
