The Preguiças Lighthouse, also called the Mandacaru Lighthouse, stands in the village of Mandacaru at the mouth of the Preguiças river inside Lençóis Maranhenses National Park; the nearest town is Barreirinhas. It opened in 1940 and is run by the Brazilian navy: a white conical concrete tower with four black bands and two galleries. Visitors climb 160 steps to the top for a wide view of the river, the dunes and the coast, and it is a fixed stop on the Preguiças river boat trip between Vassouras and Caburé. It is open to visitors daily 8:30-11:30 and 13:30-17:00.
