A tongue of land covered in palm and olive groves on the shore of salty Siwa Lake west of town; it was once an island surrounded by water, then the lake shrank and joined it to the land, but the island name stayed. Fatnas is known as the finest sunset spot in Siwa, as the sun sinks behind the lake and the distant hills, turning the water and sky orange and pink, with palm silhouettes mirrored on the still water. At the tip of the island simple cafés with seats facing the lake serve Siwan mint tea, and inland lies Fatnas Spring, a small natural swimming spring ringed by palms. You can take a small boat onto the lake before sunset. Entry is usually free, and the cafés are inexpensive. It is about a quarter of an hour by bicycle or tuk-tuk from town, so aim to arrive half an hour before sunset to find a seat with a view.
