Fazao-Malfakassa National Park is the largest of Togo's three national parks, lying between the Centrale and Kara regions along part of the border with Ghana. It covers semi-mountainous country of hills, forest and savanna. It is a place for walking and birdwatching, far from the towns. The park was created in 1975 by merging two forest reserves from 1951: Fazao, at 1,620 square kilometres, and Malfakassa, at 300. It was added to UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list in 2002 as a mixed cultural and natural site. Some 244 bird species had been recorded here by 2008. You see green grassy plains, scattered trees and thick woodland running to blue hills on the horizon under a wide sky of white clouds. In the valleys gallery forest lines the streams, with small pools of water. Visitors usually hike in the rocky hills of the Malfakassa area. It is about 23 km from Sokodé in a straight line. Visitor services are limited, so arrange your visit ahead with the park authority and a guide. Carry plenty of water and start in the morning.
