Fazenda Barranco Vermelho is a historic farm on the bank of the Paraguay River near Cáceres, Mato Grosso, dating from the 1930s; its name, «red bank», refers to the colour of its soil by the river. From 1945 to 1975 the farm was the seat of a ranching cooperative producing «charque», salted dried beef, one of the Pantanal's main products. It later became a tourist lodge, popular with anglers fishing the Paraguay River, one of the richest fishing rivers in Brazil. On the riverbank within the farm is an archaeological site registered with the national heritage institute, holding pottery from Indigenous groups who were numerous when Cáceres was founded in the eighteenth century, belonging to ceramic traditions known in the region. The place combines nature and history and is reached by prior arrangement with the lodge.
