Fazenda dos Coqueiros, the «palm-tree farm», is an old coffee estate built in 1855 for Major Cândido Ribeiro Barbosa and his wife Joaquina Maria de Jesus on the edge of Bananal, when the Paraíba Valley was the heart of Brazil's coffee wealth. The economy of these farms rested on the forced labour of enslaved people: in 1887 Bananal had the second largest enslaved population of any municipality in São Paulo province, after Campinas. The farm keeps its senzala, the slave quarters, and displays objects from the period that tell this harsh history plainly. The main house is seen on a guided tour that explains life on the estate and the coffee cycle, and the farm also runs as a country inn taking overnight guests and day visitors. Tours are paid and best booked in advance.
