Fazenda Ibicaba was opened in 1817 and belonged to Senator Nicolau Pereira de Campos Vergueiro until his death in 1859; its Tupi name means «fertile land». It lies in the municipality of Cordeirópolis, near Limeira and Rio Claro. The farm was a pioneer in several ways: among the first coffee plantations of the Limeira region (1828), among the first to use the plough on Brazilian soil (1847) and steam machinery (around 1850), and above all one of the first to bring in European immigrants on private labour contracts at a time when Brazilian farm work still rested mostly on slavery. Today it covers about 222 hectares planted with sugar cane, but its surviving coffee-era buildings, from the big house and small chapel to the slave quarters, granary and water channels, are shown to visitors on tours that are among the most popular in the area. Visits are by booking.
