The Caruaru Fair in Caruaru, inland Pernambuco, is one of the largest open-air markets in Brazil, drawing people from across the Northeast, and the national heritage institute listed it as intangible cultural heritage in 2006. It began in the 18th century as trade grew up around a small chapel built in 1782, and the city itself grew from that gathering; Northeastern singers made a famous song about it. Today the market fills the Parque 18 de Maio in sections: crafts, best known for small clay figures, meat, medicinal herbs, grains, fruit and vegetables, household goods, electronics, restaurants and the vast «sulanca» clothing market. The fair opens daily 7:00-17:00, while the sulanca runs Thursday from noon to 22:00 and Friday from 4:00 to 13:00 (with different hours in November and December). Entry is free, and the meat section may include pork.
