Hungary's loveliest Baroque palace and its most completely furnished: the Festetics family's seat in Keszthely at Balaton's western end, a hundred white rooms under red tile in seven hectares of English garden — begun in 1745 and extended for a century into the palace of western Hungary's richest nobles. The jewel is the Helikon Library: a whole hall of carved beech holding fifty-four thousand volumes, made by a single joiner over years, which survived two wars and nationalisation with its books in place — the finest palace library in Central Europe. Around it the reception rooms keep their original furniture, with a carriage museum, a hunting museum and model railways. The garden is free to stroll, and summer classical concerts in the mirror hall are a tradition. Ten minutes from Hévíz and an hour from the northern shore — your western day: palace in the morning, thermal lake in the afternoon.
