Fig Tree Bay is one of the best known beaches of Protaras in eastern Cyprus, with golden sand, shallow turquoise water and a small rocky islet offshore. It is said to take its name from an old fig tree near the beach, and it is a family favourite in the summer months. The beach is part of the Protaras resort coast, and a line of hotels, restaurants and seaside paths has grown up around it. Its appeal comes from the sandy seabed and the low rocks that frame the bay rather than from any old history, so a visit is more a day by the sea than a cultural outing. In season blue umbrellas and sunbeds line the sand, and floating jetties serve water sports and boats. You can swim to the little islet or take a boat, though judge the distance and current before trying. A promenade links the bay to its surroundings, and the finest views are from the rocks at either end or in the evening with the lights of the seafront. It is 6 km in a straight line from Ayia Napa and 40 km from Larnaca. It gets crowded from June to September, so come early to find a spot, while spring and autumn are calmer. Bring modest swimwear if you prefer it, sunscreen, and water shoes if you plan to walk on the rocks.
