Fiji's most important and oldest museum, in the Thurston Gardens botanical park at the heart of the capital, Suva, telling the history of the islands and their peoples over more than three thousand years, since the first seafarers reached the Pacific. Its best-known exhibits are huge wooden war and trading canoes in which Fijians crossed the ocean, ancient decorated pottery, traditional bark cloth with geometric designs, and tools and ornaments made from shells and whale teeth. Other galleries cover the British colonial era and the history of Fijians of Indian descent who came to work on the sugar plantations. Around the museum, Thurston Gardens, with giant tropical trees and an old clock tower, make a pleasant stroll after the visit. The ticket is about FJD 20 for overseas adults, per the museum's price announcement. It is hot and humid most of the year, so carry water and insect repellent.
