Morning in the Butterflies Valley's shade (ninety minutes) โ a village lunch โ Filerimos by afternoon: monastery, way, peacocks, the sunset cross โ twenty minutes home. The exact counter-day to Lindos: this one shade and spirit, that one rock and sea.

Filerimos is Rhodes' spiritual hill: 267 metres over Ialysos stacking the island's whole story โ ancient Ialysos' acropolis with Athena's temple footings, a Byzantine chapel, then the Knights' Gothic monastery (Italian-restored) with cloister, bells and the world-wandered icon of its Virgin (in Tinos today). From its court runs the Way of Golgotha: a solemn cypress walk past bronze Passion stations ending at a giant stone cross (16m) climbed inside by stair to its arms โ the west coast complete from Ialysos bay to the airport, and sunset here the islanders' secret. Its true residents are dozens of free-roaming peacocks filling the cypresses with cry and colour โ twenty minutes' drive from town, pairing naturally with the Butterflies Valley, its western neighbour, for one green day.
