Fjällbacka is a small fishing village on Sweden's west coast, its white and red houses with orange roofs lined along the water beneath a great rock mountain, with a boat harbour in front and bare rocky islands out to sea. It was founded in the 17th century and named after the large mountain behind it. It lies almost exactly between Uddevalla and Strömstad, about 150 km from Gothenburg. Today it is a well-known summer resort; the actress Ingrid Bergman stayed here on visits to Sweden, and a square in the village bears her name. It is also the setting of popular Swedish crime novels. You stroll the quay among boats and cafés, climb through a narrow cleft in the rocks to the top of the mountain for the view over the village and archipelago, and take a boat to nearby islands. It is about 38 km in a straight line south of Strömstad. It is crowded in July and very quiet outside summer.
