A long white-sand beach on the west coast of Mauritius, lined with shady casuarina trees and protected by a calm, clear lagoon behind the coral reef, so it is good for swimming and snorkelling most of the year. The west coast is drier and sunnier than the rest of the island, and the sun sets straight into the sea, so the beaches fill with families and holidaymakers at sunset. Dive trips leave Flic en Flac for well-known sites along the reef, and early-morning boat trips go to watch and swim with dolphins near Tamarin Bay. The town has hotels, restaurants and stalls selling local food. The beach is public and free, and the area makes an ideal base for the south-west: Casela park, the Seven Coloured Earths at Chamarel, Black River Gorges National Park and Le Morne.

Yes, morning boat trips go to watch dolphins near Tamarin Bay; choose an operator that respects the animals rather than chasing them.
