Melbourne's most famous and most photographed building, a railway station with a long yellow Edwardian Baroque facade crowned by a green copper dome and a clock tower, completed in 1910 on the site of Australia's first railway station. Above its main entrance hangs a row of old clocks showing train times, the origin of the famous local phrase meet me under the clocks, making it Melbourne's best-known meeting point for generations. The station is still the heart of the city's train network, with hundreds of thousands passing through each day. Its facade is lit in changing colours on special occasions, a lovely sight from the opposite bank of the Yarra or from Federation Square. Viewing is free at any time, the station is steps from the square and Hosier Lane, and the best photos are from the opposite corner of the intersection.
