Brasília National Forest is a protected area run by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation in the Federal District, created by presidential decree on 10 June 1999 as a green belt protecting water sources and Brasília National Park. It covers about 9,346 hectares in four geographically separate blocks in the Taguatinga and Brazlândia areas, combining native cerrado with old tree plantations, and the capital's residents come here to walk, run and mountain-bike. It has the largest mountain-bike trail network inside a protected area in Brazil, 44 kilometres long with shorter loops of 5, 10, 20 and 30 kilometres, and entry is free on opening days. The main entrance is on the BR-070 at Taguatinga; go in the morning during the dry season.
