Forte Marechal Luz stands on Ponta de João Dias at the northern entrance to Babitonga Bay, at the northern tip of São Francisco Island, and is named after Marshal Francisco Carlos da Luz, an army officer of the late Empire and early Republic. The Portuguese set up the first artillery battery on this hill in the eighteenth century to guard the bay's anchorage. The present fort was built from 1909 and opened on 21 December 1915, during the First World War, armed with Armstrong guns taken from the cruiser Benjamin Constant; it stayed in service until a 1954 decree stood it down. The Brazilian Army runs the site, and a visit takes in a small museum and paths between the old gun emplacements and their cannons, while the hilltop looks out over the ocean, the bay entrance and nearby beaches. Check visiting times before you go, as a booking may be needed.
