A pedestrian mall in old downtown Las Vegas, taking up the western blocks of Fremont Street, known for years as Glitter Gulch for its many lit signs, and now one of downtown's main attractions. Its centrepiece is a huge barrel-vault canopy 27 metres high and about 419 metres long over the street, covered with a giant screen showing light and music shows; before each show the lights of the buildings and casinos beneath it are switched off so all eyes turn to the screen. Under the canopy are famous vintage neon signs, stages with mostly free concerts, street performers and zip lines flying over the crowds, surrounded by historic hotels and casinos among the oldest in the city. Entry is free, and after dark, when the light shows begin, is the best time. It is crowded and loud at night, with alcohol everywhere, so watch your belongings; it pairs easily with the nearby Neon Museum.
