The Friendship Bridge (Ponte da Amizade) crosses the Paraná River between Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil and Ciudad del Este in Paraguay. When it was built in 1962, its 290-metre span was the world's longest for a fixed reinforced-concrete arch. More than 40,000 vehicles cross it every day, and it is vital to both cities' economies, since Brazilians cross to shop in Ciudad del Este, where Paraguay imposes no tariffs on foreign goods; it is also a major smuggling point, and Brazil has tightened border controls. Remember that it is an international border: carry your passport, check visa and customs rules for both countries, and respect Brazil's duty-free limits on the way back.
