Frigiliana is a white village on the mountain slopes of La Axarquía in Málaga province, southern Spain, about 4 km north of Nerja and 48 km east of Málaga in a straight line. People lived in the caves and rock shelters here from the end of the Neolithic, and an ancient standing stone lies northwest of the village. Its old quarter keeps an Andalusi street plan of narrow, climbing lanes and many steps, and painted tile panels on the walls tell stories from its history. Brilliant white houses climb the hillside with doors and windows painted blue, green and red, and flowerpots and bougainvillea spill from the balconies. From the edges of the village the view runs down green valleys to the Mediterranean. Visitors climb the pebbled lanes to the top of the village, stopping at small shops and cafés. Go in the morning before the heat and the tour buses, and combine it with the beaches and caves of Nerja.
