A government forest research institute founded in the 1920s at Kepong on land stripped of its forest, which was replanted until it became today's dense rainforest, described as the oldest and largest re-created tropical forest in the world. The forest spreads over a large area with walking and cycling trails, small waterfalls and streams where children paddle, a forestry museum and botanical gardens. Its best-known features are the walkways among the treetops, including the newer Forest Skywalk in the Kepong Botanic Gardens, looking out over the forest to the distant city skyline. Entry to the institute costs five ringgit for a non-citizen adult, with an extra fee per car. The canopy walkways have separate tickets for set time slots booked online; the Skywalk runs Saturday to Thursday from morning to early afternoon and is closed on Fridays. Come early, before the heat and afternoon rain, with water, insect repellent and comfortable shoes. A ride-hailing car takes about half an hour from the centre depending on traffic.
